We picked up our first Basket of the Month this morning, where we ran into Paula and her two little ones. We also ran to Fresh Market for some broccoli rabe (it's the only place we've found it in town), then to the Kroger for a chicken and some other meats to grill. Lot's of grocery running today--we even stopped by Las Delicias for some Oaxaca cheese and beer (to perch the chicken on on the grill, of course).
So, back to our basket. What a lovely thing! Here's what was in it:
1/2 gallon of raw whole milk (in a bottle of course)
Quart of fresh strawberries
Five sweet potatoes
A bunch of Swiss Chard
Arugula
Sage
Thyme
Shitake mushrooms
Shitake Sesame Salad dressing (a generous bottle)
Yellow Squash
A dozen eggs (I have eggs coming out my ears, after visiting mom and dad last week. I did make a half batch of mayonnaise and some deviled eggs yesterday)
Cheddar cheese
onions
garlic
mung bean sprouts
snow peas
The Chard will go in Deborah Madison's Chard and Onion Omelet, possibly tomorrow. We had a mess of salad, some grilled sweet potatoes (I baked them first most of the way in the microwave, then brushed with olive oil, dusted with the spice rub that also went on the pork chops we had for dinner, then squirted with clementine juice), pork chops rubbed with a mix of paprika, chile powder, chipotle powder, pepper, salt, brown sugar, and cumin.
I'm so full I could pop.
So, given that we don't really drink milk, and we have been swimming in strawberries, I made this great fast gelato.
Even though it didn't have eggs, it was really good. Something tells me the other 1/2 quart might get used in another batch (better to freeze them than have them go bad, right?).
At Las Delicias, I managed to snag a bag of Masa Harina (I was almost out, as we're hooked on fresh corn tortillas), and I also grabbed a bag of Peruano beans, which I'll definitely have to try out soon. The Oaxaca cheese is going in chiles for Susan's b-day party Sunday next.
