Food and Wine often features this page where they show a table setting or gizmos on two sides--one is the costly version, and the other is the "budget" version. I was getting dressed this morning and heard a commercial for "Pancake Puffs" and realized that there are all kinds of simple equivalents for things that Williams Sonoma sells. For instance, the sea salt that costs $9 at WM only costs like $3 at Kroger. If you are into kitchen basics and need a few things, here are some tips. I will confess, though, my pizza stone is from Williams Sonoma and it is worth paying more for--it is almost the same size as the oven rack, and since i bake a lot of yeast breads and pizza crusts, that was a good buy for me ($35 versus the $10 ones found in Target and elsewhere).
Williams Sonoma's Ebelskiver Filled Pancake Pan $35
Pancake Puffs Pan $19
William Sonoma's Apilco Ramekins $22-$32 for 4
Linens and Things Everything Kitchen Ramekins $14.99 for a set of 6 medium or a set of 8 small. This line is great for establishing your kitchen basics. I got a set of 6 individual au gratin dishes there recently and absolutely love them. You can't beat $14.99 for classic whiteware.
If you are into the Provenceware that WM sells, take a minute to check out La Tienda's print ceramics. They are hand painted and much more affordable, although WM's Marisol set is also reasonable.
